Pretty Plaits

Braids, particularly fishtails, were prevalent throughout the spring 2013 runways. Although the style is surely reminiscent of those elementary school days, these versions are both polished and quirky, allowing for an easy transition from the workday to a night out. One of my favorite blogs, Cupcakes and Cashmere, has featured a fishtail tutorial that shows the seemingly complicated style to be incredibly straightforward.  Check it out here.

An easier alternative to the fishtail is a simple braid across the top of the head, paired with a messy updo, as seen (below) at Holly Fulton. To achieve the look, braid a small portion of hair from behind the right ear, and secure it to the opposite side. Gather a front portion of hair from the top right of the crown (above the eyebrow arch) and fasten it behind the left ear with bobby pins and a spritz of hair spray, concealing the end of the braid. The remaining hair can be pulled back into a bun/loose ponytail at the base of the neck, or into a half updo.
