Ferragamo’s Iconic ‘Vara’ Celebrates 35 Years

How does the average 35-year-old celebrate their birthday? Gorge on cake? Spend it drunkenly belting out “Don’t Stop Believin'” in a musky karaoke bar? Well, if you’re Vara, shoe designer Salvatore Ferragamo’s most famous creation, you’ll launch a site, providing your fans with the opportunity to customize their very own Vara. The iconic (and 100% wearable) shoe was designed in 1978 by Ferragamo’s daughter Fiamma Di San Giuliana Ferragamo, becoming an instant hit that has since been seen on everyone from Princess Diana to Alexa Chung. Nearly thirty years after its debut, the Varina, a ballet flat version of the shoe, soon gained a cult following, including some of Hollywood’s style icons (Carey Mulligan, Jessica Biel, and Emma Roberts, to name a few). To join in on the celebration, customize your pair (here) by choosing from the Vara or Varina, over 22 color body colors, 21 grosgrain ribbons, three hardware options, and even a metal place featuring your initials. You can also gain inspiration from any (or all) of the women (below) that the brand feels epitomizes modern ‘icons’. What combination would you pick? I personally favor Camilla Belle’s :]
