Skin Essentials for Every Budget

A radiant complexion is the foundation of a polished makeup look. I believe the less is more approach applies when it comes to everyday makeup application, and although I don’t find foundation and primer necessary for day-to-day wear, choosing those that enhance, rather than hide your skin are worthy makeup staples to have on hand. Here are my picks for skin basics (concealer, primer, and foundation) in both pricier and more budget-friendly options:

Lust-Worthy Options

Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Concealer-If there is one makeup essential, it’s concealer. Tarte’s is by far the best I have ever tried, with maximum staying power and a matte finish. Typically placed on under eye circles or unsightly blemishes, a good concealer will adhere to these delicate areas while staying put throughout the day, all of which this product does, while being 100% eco-friendly. Find it here.

Yves Saint Laurent Le Teint Touche Éclat Illuminating Foundation– YSL hit gold with its Touche Éclat concealer, a cult item found in every makeup artist’s arsenal since its debut in 1992. Last June, the brand launched its Illuminating Foundation, promising the same airbrush-worthy effects, yet for the entire face. Foundation’s most common offender is that it often looks like foundation, yet YSL’s formula simply perfects and highlights skin. The product also features broad spectrum protection, defending against both UVA and UVB rays, the former of which is related to aging and skin damage. Find it here

Dior Capture Totale Multi-Perfection Makeup Base 25 SPF-While many people skip the this step (why add on another product?), primer provides a base that increases the life of foundation, acting as a spackling tool for skin, perfecting it prior to foundation application. Dior’s gives skin a subtle pearlescent finish, leaving a  dewy and youthful complexion, with both anti-aging and sun-protecting benefits. Find it here.

Budget-Friendly Options

Revlon PhotoReady Concealer-I’m wary of stick concealers since they’re often too thick and likely to crease. Revlon’s formula is thick enough to adhere to skin, yet not so much that it’s an obvious added layer. Given its packaging, it’s both travel-friendly and easy to apply prior to lipstick application, providing a nice base that mutes your natural lip color, allowing the lipstick’s hue to really stand out.  Find it here.

Almay Wake-Up Liquid Makeup-This product doesn’t have the chemically smell typically associated with foundations, and provides a sheer veil of coverage with true staying power (and no clumping!) throughout the day. As with YSL’s Illuminating Foundation, Almay’s features broad spectrum protection. Find it here.

Revlon PhotoReady Perfecting Primer-Revlon’s light-to-the-touch formula’s smooth finish serves to minimize pores and controls oil, which is fundamental for the summer months. It absorbs quickly into skin and can also be used alone or with foundation. Find it here.

*Regardless of the sun protection many products provide, these oftentimes aren’t a sufficient amount for true protection. Add a quarter-sized dallop of sunscreen to your face and neck, reapplying every two hours.
