This Saturday, the Lower East Side’s Tompkins Square Park hosted its 24th annual Halloween parade for the city’s furriest residents. With this being my fifth fall in the city, I was adamant to go, so I packed up my camera and dog (clad in a giraffe costume), and headed to experience first-hand what may best be referred to as fashion week for dogs. While all dogs were free to enter the costume contest, most were content to just walk around and have their photos taken. Below are a few of my favorites from the day!
Above: (L) A small (yet mighty) Superman. (R) Garth from Wayne’s World
This guy was an A+ poser, smizing for the cameras and, after allowing one corner of photographers an opportunity to snap away, he turned to face the other direction so those originally out of range could take his photo.
Firefighter Ave to the rescue!
A furrier version of lobby boy Zero Moustafa from Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Frida Kahlo and a spot-on ewok. Overheard: “That dog can only ever be an ewok.”
This boxer was yet another dog paying tribute to The Grand Budapest Hotel, depicting Courtesan au Chocolat, the cream-filled pastries from French patisserie Mendl’s that were featured in the film.
A pumpkin knit hat helps this Italian greyhound get in the Halloween spirit.
Even the pope was there!
A yorkie Elsa, alongside her human costars Anna and Kristoff, was a big hit.
This pair went as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Sayonara! ’til next year, Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade!
